Chesapeake Maritime Museum Wedding | Katie & Matt

St. Michaels Eastern Shore Maryland Wedding Photographers

We’ve been excited for this wedding since we went up to New York City last fall to photograph Katie & Matt’s Central Park engagement session. After spending a few hours exploring the park, we knew that these two were going to be a ton of fun on their wedding day – especially when we heard how they met! They were at a dive bar during a blizzard in NYC and Katie initially thought Matt’s glances across the bar were for her. It turns out that the table behind her was filled with New York Rangers (his favorite team), but fortunately for the two of them, the Rangers left and the two finally met!

From their first look at the Inn at Perry Cabin to the beautiful blue and white ginger jars Katie (many of which were family heirlooms) collected over the years, their St. Michaels Maritime Museum wedding was nothing short of incredible. Katie grew up in Maryland and loved the idea of hosting a big party on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Kari Rider Events did the most incredible job pulling the day together and making a town full of out-of-town guests feel welcome on the Eastern Shore.

Katie wore the most beautiful two-piece Lihi Hod wedding dress and we loved the vintage blue VW bus Katie’s dad gave her away in. Their family drove many VW buses over the years, so it was fitting to see Kate & her dad step out of one before they walked down the aisle. One of our favorite details was the “Lalli-pop” escort card display (Matt’s last name is Lalli).

Katie and Matt, your wedding day was absolutely perfect and we can’t thank you enough for asking us to be a part of it!

Naval Academy Engagement Photos | Emily & John

Annapolis, Maryland Wedding & Portrait Photographer

A few weeks ago, we spent the most beautiful evening walking around downtown Annapolis for Emily and John’s United States Naval Academy engagement session. John is currently training in Florida while Emily finishes her master’s degree at Ohio State. These two have busy schedules and we were so glad the timing worked out for these them to come back to town for a weekend.

Annapolis and the Naval Academy hold a special place in Emily and John’s hearts. Not only did John graduate from the Academy last spring, Annapolis is also the spot where he proposed last Fourth of July while Emily was visiting. The evening may have been a little hot, but we still had the most beautiful sunset over the Severn River. The entire Annapolis harbor was filled with sailboats coming in for the evening – quintessential Annapolis!

We’ve already had the opportunity to get to know Emily’s family a bit, and we can’t wait for the rest of their friends to join them in June at the Chapel and the Westin for their wedding. Emily and John are such an incredible team and we know their wedding is going to be filled with so much joy!

First Looks: 3 Reasons to Consider One

Maryland Wedding Photographers

That moment the Bride and Groom see each other for the first time on their wedding day is magical. And this is true whether the couple chooses to wait until the bride walks down the aisle or chooses to do a “first look’ prior to the ceremony.

First looks—a private moment couples choose to spend together prior to the wedding ceremony—have become more popular over the last few years. About half of our couples this year have chosen to do a first look.

While we consider ourselves people who value tradition, there are definitely a few good reasons to consider a first look. Here are 3 reasons to consider a ‘first look’:

1. A first look cuts through the chaos of the day.

Once the ceremony begins, the day takes off quickly. A ‘first look’ is an opportunity to enjoy some quiet time alone, enjoy each other’s company, and reflect on the gravity of marriage before day takes off.

Wedding days can be a whirlwind and they tend to fly by. There’s much to do and a lot of people to see and with whom to catch up. We always encourage our couples to take a few minutes every so often during their wedding to stop and soak in everything that’s happening.

2. Make more time for Pictures without sacrificing cocktail hour.

When there is no first look, the majority of the pictures have to be taken after the ceremony. Family pictures are generally done as soon as the ceremony ends because it’s the easiest time to round up everyone. Next up is full bridal party, and then bride and groom portraits. This generally runs into cocktail hour.

A first look opens up time prior to the ceremony for full bridal party pictures and—sometimes—for a few bride and groom portraits, too (although we prefer to do bride and groom portraits at sunset. This allows the couple to get to most of cocktail hour, which makes the rest of the evening not feel so rushed.

3. Avoid possible bad weather and/or give your time to freshen-up after crying

If you’re expecting weather on your wedding day, it might be best to plan on a first look because it gives you more options for pictures. If it’s pouring after the ceremony, you’ll be thankful you had pictures done in advance.

And reason 3b is for all you cryers out there. If you know the tears are going to fly the first time you see your other half the day of your wedding, a first look will give you time to freshen up before the ceremony.

First look or not, the first time you see each other on your wedding day will be special.
